Providing students with options is a wonderful way to incorporate both introverted and extroverted individuals for a successful learning environment. Having the adaptability to change and switch the structure of a lesson plan can have a positive impact on the students development. Most introverted individuals have a difficult time adapting to particular regiments of the classroom structure. Providing them with open blocks for relaxation and inquiry will further spark an intrinsic motivation to learn.
Engagement
A recent study suggests that teachers should focus more on classroom engagement compared to typical classroom participation. Engagement focuses on the depth of knowledge and willingness to learn, while participation is focused around the quantity of random knowledge. This ties in astronomically with the new British Columbia curriculum. Providing a platform for all introverted and extroverted individuals to be evaluated on a level playing field. An extrovert could show their engagement by looking attentive, asking questions, and answering questions whenever they arise. While an introverted individual may look attentive, take notes on classroom discussion, and formulate questions and ideas by writing them down.
Think-Pair-Share
Think-pair-share is a collaborative learning strategy where students can work together in solving problems or answering a question that is regarding an assigned reading. This strategy requires students to think individually regarding the topic to answer the question; and socially when they share their answer among peers. From the perspective of introversion, it works wonderfully as it allows students to accumulate and foster their own ideas individually, before sharing within their peer groupings. Teachers can control the groupings by selecting children they believe will work well with each other. If a student is highly introverted, the teacher has the opportunity to place them into a group with a supportive extrovert. This will allow the introvert to feel slightly more confident as their idea will be shared among the class. If the introverted individual was placed in a grouping with a non-supportive extroverted individual, they may feel defeated and broken down and feel as though their opinion doesn't matter.
